From ants to zebras, there’s so much fun to be had in alphabetically punning living creatures, both animal and insect. In Dan Wafford’s If Kangaroos Wore Tennis Shoes, there’s more to this rhyming story than kangaroos in tennis shoes, jumping so high that you’ll never know where or when they’ll touch back down on earth. And what about seahorses? Could they enter and win the Kentucky Derby if they had four legs? Now that would be something to see. Then one might also consider the extinct xenoceratops. Don’t you think, “These fascinating dinosaurs/ Would make interesting pets?”

Dan Wafford’s picture book, If Kangaroos Wore Tennis Shoes, is more than just another alphabet book. It’s also more than just another book about the animal kingdom. Told in rhyming verse with lots of fun and funny alliterations, this gem of a book will have young readers enjoying a chuckle or two at the possible antics of the alphabetically arranged animals, insects, and the lonely dinosaur. The final note about the zebra, if he were a criminal; “He’d fit right in, he wouldn’t/ Even have to change his clothes.” And then there’s the yak, with an incredible gift to yak, with a superb illustration that expands on the yakking potential of the yak. The stripes say it all. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and add to the humor of the book. Even the font varies in color, highlighting some keywords, and enabling young readers to strengthen their vocabulary skills. This is definitely an engaging, educational, and funny read.
