Wow! With images that are so realistic and colorful, illustrator Pamela Becker has done an excellent job illustrating I’m Your Buddy: A True Story about a Goffin Cockatoo. People are hardest to draw, but her highlights, shadows, and tones make them look real. The full-page colorful artwork help to convey the warm story told by author Carol Ann Rowell. Duplicating the colored, textured paper on other text pages suggests an inviting layout.
What a wonderful idea to write this story from the perspective of Buddy the cockatoo, who lives in a pet store until he wins the heart of a nice lady who takes him home. But, who adopts whom? Buddy loves his new home because it has hanging bells, ribbons, and other fun toys. Should Buddy ring the bell or eat some of his favorite seeds? But most importantly, he has the love of the bird lady. He meets the three other birds—each one has its own personality. Chico, the male African Grey, doesn’t seem impressed and often gives Buddy a stare. After a few days, Chico becomes friendly and more accepting of the new bird.
Buddy will dance, dip, jump, and tap his way into the hearts of children and parents in this wonderful story, I’m Your Buddy. Even though Buddy is missing some feathers, his personality helps him to shine. Buddy is a reminder to us all that true beauty comes from within. By the end of the book, Buddy the cockatoo will have you saying “Wings up!” which means “Be the best you can be.” Parents will enjoy reading this story to young children and young readers will love it, too.
