In the Morning Hour by Mike Mallow is a brilliant crime thriller. The story unfolds in O’Brien County, West Virginia. Cabel Walsh, a former newspaper publisher, had his window at home shattered on New Year’s Eve with a brick wrapped in a rolled newspaper page alleging that he had killed a member of a local drug cartel. Cabel discovers that this is a new free newspaper whose owners are unknown. Eric, an orphan schoolboy, delivers the newspapers. At the same time, Felina McGann-Eras is freed from prison and seeks to recover her authority over the county’s drug cartels. Against this backdrop, George Newfarmer Jr., the son of another cartel leader, and his girlfriend Blair Hendricks search for information about George’s sister Shawna, who had reportedly died on Creek Mountain four years previously. What connects these threads?
Mike Mallow’s In the Morning Hour captivated me from the first chapter and kept me turning pages until the very end. I enjoyed untangling the complex web of plot twists that revolved around deceit, subterfuge, and betrayal. I liked the multi-thread plot and how Mike interlaced all the threads to explode in the jaw-dropping ending. The subtle humor was outstanding, and the adorable beagle, Mister Waggles, was a great addition to the motley cast of thoroughly developed characters. But what made this novel stand out for me was the philosophical wisdom—Eric’s viewpoint on forgiveness and Cabel’s thoughts on the use of violence to combat violence. This awesome story will appeal to adult crime fiction and action thriller fans. Episodes of violence will deter sensitive and younger readers.
