Indigo, The Deep by Kellye Abernathy introduces Condi, a determined 15-year-old surfer who buries her heartbreak in the adrenaline of surfing after the sudden departure of her first love. Her small beach town is completely falling apart between strange earthquakes and a shady corporate research ship parked right off the coast. This industrial vessel is actively poisoning the local waters, causing a big environmental upheaval that drives aggressive sharks straight into the path of local surfers. As the cove's safety continues to be affected, Condi's foster brother has to deal with nasty town rumors and his own personal trauma while diving into dangerous underwater cave systems. With the whole coastline under siege from corporate greed and wild weather, the local kids are forced to step up. Will Condi find the strength to save her beloved cove before everything is destroyed?

Indigo, The Deep by Kellye Abernathy is an engaging YA fantasy that offers a highly refreshing approach to saving the planet. The book captivated me because the author really takes the time to build authentic friendships and family dynamics before the characters are pulled into the dangers around them. Because the prose flows beautifully, the narrative is effortless, and the unfolding mystery kept me hooked from start to finish. My favorite moment, through it all, was the way the author used sensory descriptions and animal bonds to reveal the internal worlds of the cast. It completely subverts the usual angles of the genre by making the magical occurrences feel like a biological reality of the sea. I thought the author did a fantastic job of addressing corporate greed in a way that never compromised the momentum of the book. If you are a fan of rich world-building, contemporary fantasy, and high-stakes ecological thrillers, it's an absolute must-read.
