Inhuman Intentions by Mason Manthous is a dark fantasy novel about Aaron White, the captain of an elite military unit known as S-0. Aaron and his team are trying to track down and kill a dangerous Nephilim—half human, half monster—called Silas. They are in the dangerous frontier, a land filled with deadly monsters called nightmares. Their hunt leads them into the territory of Lord Roman Sterling—a rival warden—where they face an attack, battle with Silas, and are resented by the villagers after they find out that Aaron is a Nephilim, just like the other monsters. Aaron has to return to his city, led by Lady Sitri Baal, but there seems to be chaos. There are several accounts of gruesome murders linked to a conspiracy involving ancient magic and a plot to destabilize the region and cause war. Aaron has to go to Lord Sterling’s territory to prevent this war, risking his life to find the truth and protect his people.

Inhuman Intentions is fast-paced, full of suspense, and very engaging. It mixes detailed battle scenes with deep questions about trust, loyalty, and survival. I felt bad for Aaron and how he struggled with being accepted by people who saw him as a monster because of his Nephilim background, despite how much he really cared for and protected people. Aaron, most of the time, is seen fighting monsters, some of whom are of his kind, which makes his role more heartfelt and relatable. The characters are well-developed and execute their roles flawlessly. The pacing was fast enough to keep me on edge as I read, with different plot twists that made it more unpredictable. I enjoyed the conversations between the characters, especially between Aaron and his team, S-O. The way they talk and depend on each other, especially Durham's humor and calm support from Dalton, made the group more human and admirable. Inhuman Intentions by Mason Manthous is not one of those books that can be easily predicted. The heroes won but were not celebrated, and each victory seemed like more trouble to come. It shows a world where victories are never perfect, and trust is rare and valuable. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark fantasy novels with monsters, magic, and fast-paced action.
