Integrity Based Policing: Policing the Streets of Las Vegas by Dan Barry is a crime novel that reads like a compelling work of non-fiction. This comprehensive book is full of powerful stories about policing with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department and is based on the author's 30+ years as an officer. The author makes the highs and lows of one of the most challenging jobs in the world come alive on the page and in your hearts and minds. You'll find emotional stories, some with humor, some with sadness, anger, confusion, or tragedy. Besides being an eye-opening primer for would-be police officers, this book serves as a cathartic place to sort out your feelings and opinions about law enforcement. No doubt there are problems, but some of these can be avoided, and Barry explains how.
The author's love for law enforcement is evident, and each chapter has its own story to tell. Besides his own story, he tells the stories of crossing paths with others, serving them, doing the best he could. I like how he stresses the importance of sound leadership in law enforcement and how ethics should be valued over ulterior motives. As a social worker who has worked alongside the police for many years, I can honestly say that I respect the position and know how dangerous the job is. Integrity-based policing should be implemented nationwide to make all cities safer and towns more livable regardless of size. I like Barry's simple style, personal approach, the inclusion of his faith, and the concise way the chapters are organized. Especially lovely is the way he says we shouldn't judge all officers by the actions of a few and admits that problems exist in law enforcement that should be dealt with. If you're looking for a book about police reform that offers real insight and answers, Integrity Based Policing: Policing the Streets of Las Vegas by Dan Barry should be at the top of your reading list.
