Into Shadow (Shadow and Light Volume 1) by T.D. Shields is a young adult science fiction story about Poppy, the daughter of the country’s president and the First Lady. Her life is filled with luncheons, charity work, media events, and formal dinners. When mercenaries break into the White House and slaughter her father and a select handful of dignitaries, Poppy must run for her life. Across a desolate, war-ravaged country, Poppy travels to safety in Denver. Dangers lurk in the form of bands of cruel renegades, mutated plants and animals, and harsh climate changes. Thank goodness, Daddy equipped her with kick-ass survival skills.
In this first book of the Shadow and Light series, author T.D. Shields does an exemplary job of laying down the fundamental elements of what promises to be an exciting ride. Her attention to detail and the artful balance of explaining the scientific elements instilled into this dystopian world, with layering of a compelling plot and memorable characters, makes for a delightful read that keeps the reader engaged. Sprinkled in tidbits, such as Roomie, the feral cat turned companion, added the perfect final touches to an otherwise remarkable literary delicacy. Into Shadow will not disappoint. Into Shadow offers adults of all ages the opportunity to get lost in a futuristic world with a strong protagonist who uses brains over brawn whenever possible. If the future volumes to this series are just as well written, I can’t wait to once again join Poppy on her perilous journey of discovery.
