Izzy and the REAL! Truth About Moose Boy by Deb Gardner Allard is written for third and fourth graders. Izzy knows as little about boys as boys know about girls at that age. Moose Boy, aka Conrad, is the new boy at school. He is constantly picking on Izzy; she isn’t sure if he’s a bully or if she “likes” him. The other girls at school thinks he is cute. Mr. Overly is the new fourth grade teacher. His teaching style is very different from Mrs. Boomholler; Mr. Overly makes learning fun; he uses dance and songs to reinforce his lessons. Mrs. Boomholler has pink poodle hair, pointy blue glasses, and carries a yardstick with her as if it is a weapon; she bullies both teachers and students. When Mrs. Boomholler gets Mr. Overly removed from the fourth grade class, the students are tempted to seek revenge but instead try to be extra nice by bringing her sweet treats.
Izzy and the REAL! Truth About Moose Boy is a delightful tale about growing up. Izzy learns a lot of lessons during her fourth grade year. She learns the difference between a bully and teasing, to have compassion for others and that what goes around comes around. I enjoyed watching Izzy and Conrad become friends. It was also interesting to see the relationship between Mr. Overly and his students; he cultivated loyalty instead of fear. I shared this book with my grandchildren; it had them laughing out loud. I hope the author plans to make this into a series.
