Jane Digby’s Diary by C.R. Hurst is an enjoyable book about the exploits of this young woman in an era when independence and freedom for females were frowned upon. This book recalls the life and loves of Jane Digby, a real woman who lived in the nineteenth century. She has been divorced, (already a social ‘crime’), and is now traveling Europe. She forms close attachments to various men during this period, and with each of them, she finds happiness. Her time in Munich gives her much pleasure, as seen in her liaison with the king. As we read on, she finds love with a man from Greece, and her joy is palpable. She suffers terrible grief and heartache, but is strong and pragmatic, and simply carries on. Jane was determined to live life to the full, and nothing was going to stand in her way!
Jane Digby’s Diary: A Rebel Heart has all the right ingredients for a captivating and engaging read; love, sex, royalty, duels, romps around Europe, etc, and takes the reader back to an era when society could be very harsh. The writing style is fluid and easy to read, with small sections headed sometimes by the date. There are some lovely descriptions of various places, which give the book character and atmosphere. C.R. Hurst talks from a personal standpoint as if we are her good friends. The prose never gets flowery, and is always to the point. Although there are no erotic or graphic sexual descriptions, there are quite a few innuendos. A well-written book.
