In David Alyn Gordon's Jigsaw Beginnings, during WWII, Mussolini recruits Italian scientists to create a teleportation machine. He believes this machine is the key to winning the war. A teleportation attempt traps two modern-day American students (who are on a school trip in Italy) in the past. These two students, Mariah and Noah, eventually become entangled in a resistance group fighting to prevent Mussolini, Hitler, and General Franco from using this newfound scientific discovery to alter history. Along the way, Mariah and Noah must collaborate with the scientists responsible for bringing them to 1943. They need to discover a way to return to their timeline. Fortunately, their knowledge of historical events aids them throughout the journey. But will they ever find their way back home?

Jigsaw Beginnings is a fascinating time-travel adventure filled with action, drama, a little romance, and historical details. It's a fun, fast-paced read that YA fans will enjoy. David Alyn Gordon does a great job of blending humor into the action-packed storyline. I enjoyed the witty banter between the teens. Their dialogues add color and verve to their dynamic. Gordon's descriptions of Italian and American settings are robust and detailed. He succeeds in making his readers feel as if they are right there with Mariah and Noah, watching the events as they unfold. Readers will experience Italian history and World War II through the unique perspectives of the main characters. Jigsaw Beginnings contains multiple subplots and surprises that will keep readers on their toes. If you are a YA literature fan and love Italian history and tales of World War II events, include this engaging novel in your reading collection.

Jigsaw Beginnings by David Alyn Gordon is a page-turner time-travel novel. Noah has had an obvious crush on Mariah for a long time. He is making peace with the idea that she does not want to be more than friends. However, their 2017 graduation trip to Italy may be an opportunity for them to get closer. They are going on the trip with four classmates and two teachers as chaperones. When the duo goes to get some food together, they are caught in a time rift that sends them back to 1943. They are almost caught by fascist soldiers; fortunately, they find refuge in a church. Yet, when they wake up, tied up after being drugged by the nuns, they have to wonder if they have been betrayed.

It was a thrill to read Jigsaw Beginnings by David Alyn Gordon. I loved how every time I thought I had the story figured out, there was a plot twist. The pacing of the story is spectacular. There is a lot of tension that builds up over the uncertainty of whether Noah and Mariah will be able to return to their own era. Having to experience the harsh realities of wartime Italy, their relationship dynamic changes. However, other potential love interests arise for both of them. Gordon introduces us to a large cast of characters, but they are all well-developed to serve their role in the story. Even the minor characters made me laugh and cry. I highly recommend Jigsaw Beginning to all readers. I am looking forward to the second installment in this series.
