J.J. Houston: Trail Of The Grey Wolf by B.K. Crawford is set in the summer of 1964, where 13-year-old J.J. Houston decides to investigate the sinister forces behind the disappearance of hundreds of children in Bradford County. She learns about an underground military base located on Sullivan Hill, as she and her friends try to unravel the mystery of the Trail of the Grey Wolf.
Without revealing too much of the book’s premise, this is an intriguing mystery tale about UFOs, aliens, and government conspiracies in the '60s. I particularly like how life back in the swinging era is depicted through J.J.’s somewhat dysfunctional family, her gritty daily adventures, and also touches on the subject of the Vietnam War through her worn out, older brother, Danny, a soldier. The chapters are mostly short, making the reading faster for a plot that is already swift paced from the beginning. Crawford also excels at highlighting the lesser characters in the story.
On the other hand, I sometimes felt the pace was a tad too fast. Combined with Crawford’s narrative style, there were times where I had to reread some parts to make sure that I didn’t miss some of the characters’ introduction or subject matter mentioned by the young female protagonist. Even so, this issue didn’t put a significant dent in my reading. With its frank and witty narrative as well as dialogue, the story kept my interest from start to finish. This is a solid sleuth story that young and adult readers can enjoy.
