Karma Cats to the Farm by Kathleen Kastner is a picture story about factory farming. Penny the Pig lives in a crate. She can’t go outside and enjoy the sunshine or roll in the mud. When she and her pals are loaded onto a truck, she panics. She thought the farmer was meant to look after her, but he isn’t. Penny makes a bid for freedom but runs into trouble straight away. The Karma Cats come to the rescue and help Penny escape danger and introduce her to a life she had only ever dreamed of.

Karma Cats to the Farm by Kathleen Kastner is a lovely story with some stunning illustrations by Caroline Tran. The animal characters are adorable and, although it’s about factory farming, it is written tastefully. All animals should find their way to a rescue farm, and the more the younger generation learns about the awful way animals are raised for food, the more chance there is of the world changing in time. This story teaches kids that animals deserve to be treated with love and compassion, but it also teaches them that they are in charge of their own destiny. If they want to change things, it just takes the courage to make that leap. Using the Karma Cats is a wonderful touch as it shows kids that only humans can be cruel – animals look out for each other. The photos at the end of the book are a nice touch, too, as they give the story even more meaning. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to all young readers.
