In King Herod's Treasure by Mark Akst, Mark Cohn is a retired hotel manager who has spent many years caring for his elderly mother. During this time, he had done little socializing as he mostly stayed indoors. He also developed an interest in Jewish history and intended to visit Israel. After his mother’s death, he finally gets the time to visit Israel. During the preparations for his trip, Mark had enlisted the services of a competent archaeologist, known as Eric Jansen. Eric is accomplished and very handsome, and Mark is instantly attracted to him. They both travel to various archaeological sites and stay in different hotels. At one point, Mark suspects something unusual about the ancient King Herod’s family tomb and wants permission from the government to excavate. This makes him adjust his schedule due to changes in commitments and also allows him to spend more time with Eric. How will things unfold?

King Herod's Treasure by Mark Akst is wonderfully written, and once you start reading it, there is no putting it down. I loved the seamless flow of the plotline, which ensured no room for confusion, and the themes explored, such as that of tolerance. I believe such literature is a step in the right direction in addressing stereotypes against minority groups. The characters are well-developed, and Mark also ensured all events and places were vividly captured, which helped create a mental picture of what was happening. This amazing work also piqued my curiosity about Jewish history and the writings of historians like Josephus. The reader will appreciate the excellent narration, which adds to the overall beauty of the work. This was a good read, and I look forward to reading something else by Mark Akst.
