Labor Intensive: A Nurse's Journal by Natalie Wyler is a compelling book that brilliantly captures a young nurse’s journey as she follows her career alongside medical doctors and nurses, getting trained to provide obstetric care in a teaching hospital. Follow her story within a two-year period, written as journal entries, and see what happens within the confines of the hospital, the grim environment, the stress around complicated health issues for mothers and their children, the fears and hopes of medical professionals, and the dynamics of relationships that keep the nurses awake, working impossible hours and shifts.
This is an engrossing journal that relates real life stories, captures emotions — as raw as they may be — and literally brings the reader into the world navigated by doctors and nurses. It is incredible to watch the narrator as she grows in confidence, each day at a time, and as she gets to own her profession. The writing is excellent, laced with humor and revelations about the medical profession. Apart from Natalie Wyler’s excellent writing, the reader will encounter wonderful characters; the reader will explore very complex human emotions, especially those associated with fear, the preservation and protection of life, and the thrill of giving to others.
Labor Intensive: A Nurse's Journal is a captivating read, a well-crafted memoir that documents a nurse’s experience in great detail. It is a story that professionals in the medical field will find delightful. It will also appeal to readers who love well-crafted memoirs, compelling characters, and stories that are infused with realism. I found it delightful and utterly enjoyable.
