Midnight Ballerina is the first book in an enthralling fantasy series by Jhani Mills. The story follows a hybrid of Fae and mortal blood called Lysandra, who has endured brutal ballet training designed to suppress her magic and to be a weapon for the powerful, obsessive Valerius. She performs under strict discipline as a gilded captive in candlelit ballrooms. Valerius has never looked at her as a woman, only as a dangerous weapon. Then enters Rylan, a Destroyer sent to eliminate any supernatural threat, starting with Lysandra. But when he meets her, what he sees is something different, a disciplined predator on the cusp of a deadly awakening. A forbidden alliance develops quickly between them, and the relationship transforms from one of hunter and prey to feral equals. They are forced to flee, going through old ley lines towards a locus where worlds bleed, and Valerius awaits to complete one act that will make him immortal.
Jhani Mills is now one of my favorite fantasy storytellers, thanks to this wonderful first installment. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I found the characters to be complex. Lysandra captivated me as a disciplined dancer, and her arc is spectacular, showing as she transitions from someone controlled into a sovereign force and reclaiming control of her life. Rylan was fun to follow, a warrior who, in the right moment, chooses love over genocide. Valerius is the monster who inspires resentment from any reader, and his obsession with Lysandra’s mother, Lyra, inspires some of his despicable actions. Midnight Ballerina is a propelling fantasy that brims with action. I was fascinated by how the author injects energy into the story, cleverly using mortal discipline against Fae chaos to boost the tension. It absorbed me as I followed the conflict between duty and desire. The worldbuilding features unique laws of magic, the characters are larger-than-life and believable, and the storytelling is superbly delivered.
