Three years later, with Rachel having settled into her new life, people from her past come to San Miguel. Each is looking for help or access to her, and their presence threatens to bring back the mess she had escaped in the first place and ruin her new life. Dragonette drew me in with a dramatic introduction that immediately set the stage for the characters’ dilemma. The narration moves at a steady pace, allowing room for reflection, tension, and the characters’ day-to-day activities. Dragonette balances narrative details with character development, making me feel like I was next to the characters in San Miguel, experiencing everything alongside them. The town came alive, and I could see its setting and its bustling community comprising Mexicans and a tight-knit, gossipy network of American boomer expatriates. I understood Rachel’s personal struggles, particularly with her ex-husband Rob, her loose-mouthed friend Kiki, her troubled cousin Tommy, and the promiscuous Cyn. If you are looking for a contemporary drama laced with romantic tension, a hint of mystery, plot twists, and suspense, Last Sunset in San Miguel by Rita Dragonette is a great pick.
