What’s a salad without lettuce? Probably just a random selection of raw vegetables. But in Linda J Pepe’s Lettuce, Be Thankful, the proud selection at the salad bar has an important lesson to learn. Carrots, radishes, cucumbers, and even croutons, to name but a few, can’t make a salad without lettuce. They’re too proud to realize the importance of lettuce. Their boasting hurts the lettuce so much that he packs up his leaves and marches off, resulting in the closure of the salad bar. It’s a wake-up call for all the individual veggies at the salad bar. Can these random veggies make it right with the lettuce? And what about the lettuce? Doesn’t he have to come to terms with who he is and what he means to any great salad?
Linda J Pepe’s picture book story, Lettuce, Be Thankful, is a clever way to introduce vegetables, and especially salads, to young readers. The fun use of sound words to carry the story along will have young readers chuckling as they learn that “In Heinz sight…” and Tomato’s great line to Lettuce: “You’re un-be-leaf-able! I love you from my head to-ma-toes.” As the veggies make their plea to Lettuce to return to the salad bar, they sing a happy tune of what is so special about each one of them (and Lettuce, too). The illustrations by Jasmine Mills are just as inspirational and fun as the story itself. What a great way to teach young readers about healthy eating, while also pointing out the importance of self-acceptance (Lettuce needs to learn how to accept who he is), and teamwork (the veggies all have to learn to work together). An educational and fun read.
