Lilly Saves Jim the Frog by John Donkers is a sweet picture book told in Lilly’s own words. Every evening after dinner, Lilly and her Grandpa head out on their bikes to the park, and tonight should be no different. She helps Grandpa grill burgers and clean up the kitchen, then goes to get the bikes ready by the front door and stops in her tracks. Something tiny is stuck between the screen and the glass in the door, and Lilly can’t just leave it there. What if it’s hungry? The thought nags at her until she finally asks Grandpa to help. While he fetches a screwdriver, she fills a cardboard box with fresh grass. Will the rescue go the way they hope, and what will happen to their evening bike ride?
Lilly Saves Jim the Frog by John Donkers is a gentle, funny, and beautifully illustrated story that’s easy for young children to follow. It’s written in short, simple sentences from Lilly’s point of view, so it’s clear and quick to read aloud. The pace is steady, with a little worry while the rescue is planned and a sudden comic moment that kids will love. The best part is the relationship between Lilly and her Grandpa and how natural they are together. Grandpa does the tool work but lets Lilly make the decisions, and he’s always there to comfort her when she needs it. Kids will see that being kind to an animal feels good long after the moment has passed, and that caring for nature can start with something small. It’s a lovely book for grandparents and grandchildren to share, and a good pick for young readers who love animals and family stories.
