Little Puddles by Shannon Dill, illustrated by Chris E Hammond, is about a little man named PJ who lives on a little island, in a little house in a little town, named Littleton, and has a little garden. But then he gets a big idea. Shannon Dill has a fine sense of humor and Chris E Hammond has a matching sense of design. Readers will get a good giggle out of the idea while at the same time they’ll hope that PJ has more ideas to keep his life fun. (The author is working on sequels.) The typeface layout emphasizes the fun. The pastel colors blur when PJ spins his umbrella. The art pulls the reader into the story.

This story is as gentle as A.A. Milne’s Pooh stories and just as silly. The author and artist clearly enjoy innocent humor and sweetness, much like Mac Barnett did in The Skunk. By choosing an adult to portray the action in a children’s picture book, Shannon Dill added an extra layer of humor. It’s fun to see adults enjoying doing childish things without being criticized. I hope that children, and the adults who read this story to them, take the next opportunity to enjoy puddles just as much as PJ does. Fun is all around us if we choose to play. I know this phrase is often used to mean “Get lost” but in the spirit of this story, I mean this in the very best way: “Go jump in a puddle.”
