Do you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood? Well, Bethany Stahl’s new story, Little Red: Meeko’s Nutty Tales, might change your mind. The story starts with a very old squirrel named Meeko. Meeko settles in his rocking chair, surrounded by his friends who are eager to hear him tell another story. He starts telling the story of Little Red Riding Hood and her trip to Grandma’s house. Something is lurking in the woods and beats her to Grandma’s house. When she arrives, she finds Grandma in her bed. Is it Grandma, is it the wolf or is it something else? Fortunately, the story ends happily. After Meeko finishes his tale, the other animals have a few questions, but Meeko assures them the tale he’s told is a classic.
Fractured Fairytales are always a big hit with kids. Most kids will be familiar with the classic version of Little Red Riding Hood and they will laugh along with the marsh creatures at the changes that Meeko makes to the tale. Bethany Stahl’s illustrations, as usual, are a highlight of the book. All her characters from Little Red Riding Hood to Meeko to all his animal friends are brimming with life. The afterword shares that Meeko is based on a real flying squirrel that Bethany Stahl cared for when he couldn’t return to the wild. Little Red: Meeko’s Nutty Tales is a perfect bedtime tale. It will be enjoyed by animal lovers and fairytale lovers. I’m looking forward to more nutty tales from Meeko!
