Lizzy the Pizzly, written by Meghan DesLauriers and illustrated by Amanda Letcher, is a children's picture book that follows the journey of Lizzy, a rare pizzly bear, a hybrid of a polar bear and a grizzly. Lizzy embraces her uniqueness but dreams of finding a friend who understands her. She sets off to find another pizzly bear and, along the way, meets a geep (a sheep-goat hybrid) and a zorse (a zebra-horse hybrid), who both join her search. After much searching, they find another bear, but it turns out to be a grolar bear, a different hybrid between a grizzly and a polar bear. Lizzy accepts the grolar bear as a friend, and together, the four animals celebrate their differences while forming a bond based on shared experiences.
Meghan DesLauriers delivers an endearing story in a catchy, perfect rhyme scheme with Lizzy the Pizzly, making it fun to read aloud and easy for young readers to follow. DesLauriers takes the standard theme of uniqueness and makes it special by creating blended animals with a playful language that never feels forced, effectively conveying a message about embracing differences. The illustrations by Amanda Letcher are equally delightful, using a soft, watercolor palette with whimsical artwork that breathes life and color into the story. The animals' hybrid bodies and full-spread landscape settings are wonderful. Overall, Lizzy the Pizzly is a beautifully illustrated and well-written piece of children's literature that is pitch-perfect with its messaging and a great addition to the nightly rotation. Very highly recommended.
