Everyone needs a friend – someone who loves to do the same things you enjoy, and just enjoys being around you. Louie, a young duck, had his cousins, but they didn’t like to ride the waves as he did. And sometimes they had to go across the lake with their family to visit. That left Louie all alone. Then Mr. and Mrs. Goose’s grandson, Gus, comes to live with them. He might be a little sad as he just lost his parents, but he warms up to Louie and the best thing is that Gus enjoys riding the waves. Gus may have promised Mr. and Mrs. Goose to be friendly with their grandson, but he’s discovered a new friend and he’s looking forward to sharing lots of fun times with him.
Vivian Zabel’s animal story, Louie Finds a Friend: A Louie the Duck Story, is a charming story about friendships and acceptance. The plot develops as Louie greets a new young goose to the nesting area. Louie and Gus hit it off right away, even though Gus is still sad to have lost his parents. As the story progresses, Louie learns how Gus, like Louie, never really had a friend. Where he came from, Gus was teased and tormented by the other youngsters. Louie has never experienced bullying and is shocked that others would be tormenters. The story is told with compassion, addressing several current issues, including bullying. The author also discusses grief and loss of a loved family member. With colorful illustrations, this is a lovely story to teach young readers to care for others and to accept everyone for their unique differences, while also helping them through difficult times.
