Love Follows Murder: In the Land of Enchantment by Maryrose Carroll tells the story of a gruesome murder and a loving family. It is set in and around Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, a place steeped in a thousand years of history, making it a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ava Harmon is a twenty-one-year-old half-Red Willow Indian who lives in Chicago. She wants to step out of her family's cocoon and become a sheriff’s deputy in Taos. The sheriff, Luke Fonda, isn't happy to learn that one applicant for the deputy position is a woman, yet he knows he can't be prejudiced against women, Indians, or both. Shortly after Ava is accepted as a deputy, she, the First Tribal Sheriff, Feliz (her uncle), and Luke go on a mission to catch a criminal named Diego Gonzalez.
Love Follows Murder is a quick, interesting read with amazing, sharp characters. The story is well-written and contains concise and valuable information. Maryrose Carroll has crafted a clever and enjoyable novel about history, family, traditions, love, murder, and a suitable place. This fictional account of a 1962 murder is not to be missed. The love that slowly develops between Sheriff Luke and Ava will appeal to romance, suspense, and mystery fans. Love Follows Murder offers an ending that doesn't feel like the end and makes you hope for another book featuring Luke and Ava. I would love a bit more romance.
