Love YOU for YOU! by Precious Allen takes the reader on a journey in rhyme, looking at different abilities, different cultures, different languages as well as physical attributes and showing that whatever they may be, everyone is individual and should be free and proud to be themselves. The story looks at those who might be tall or short, be loud or quiet, be fun-loving or somewhat reserved, however they look or what they might wear, everyone can aspire to be what they want to be, and their individuality is what makes them who they are. Colourful illustrations enhance the story and a young reader will enjoy picking out the differences in the story and perhaps discussing with a parent or teacher to encourage those who might feel they are different from their peers.
The author, Precious Allen, has crafted a simple yet poignant story that covers a wide spectrum of issues in today’s society, including gender, racism, physical disabilities, emotional and mental disabilities, and social interacting. All of these are faced by children especially socially or in a school situation, and this rhyming story shows children that, in fact, any differences are unimportant in the grand scheme of things and that each one can achieve whatever they might desire as long as they are proud of who they are. As the title says, Love YOU for YOU! Lots of discussion points in the book make it ideal in a classroom situation where the story might draw out children’s thoughts and enable them to voice their concerns.
