Mad Dash is the first book in the West Creek Ranch series by Sage Evans. Christa Blackburn attends the 100th Annual Whiskey Mile Frontier Days & Rodeo in Higgins, Wyoming, selling her leather-made wares with her father. Max and Carter Corbett perform tricks for the crowd until a riding accident brings Christa and Carter face to face for the first time since high school. Memories of the past cause them both to try to fit into each other's worlds, with Christa's low-income family not deemed to be suitable by Carter's rich grandparents. Carter's hostility toward them reaches its peak after an accident almost claims Christa's life, which ultimately forces Carter to re-examine his life choices and he leaves town. When Christa gets her own priorities in order, she follows her heart to Carter and prays that they can pursue their dreams without having to ask others for permission.
Sage Evans is definitely an author to keep your eye out for. Her well-written and realistic style is what drew me so far into Mad Dash that I had to remind myself to take a nap here and there. Bonding the two main characters by way of a terminally ill child's dream, although unexpected, was so nicely done. Christa is dealing with two parents with serious problems, while Carter and Max are bowing to their stoic and seemingly overly strict grandparents who put money before true love. The laughs and twists in the story regarding Max and Carter were both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. The West Creek Ranch series reminds me so much of my own childhood, growing up on a large farm, and I believe that audiences will be as hooked on Mad Dash as I was. Libraries and bookstores everywhere will reap the rewards of following the incredible talent that is Sage Evans and the West Creek Ranch tales.
