Made for This: Lessons in Leadership, Legacy, and Living Unapologetically by DeAngela Burns-Wallace is a memoir, but it’s not merely the telling of her life story. The book is intended to show how it’s possible to become a leader of others while remaining true to yourself. The author is an accomplished woman. Not only does she have a doctorate in education, but she’s also served in many high-profile leadership positions. Her accomplishments are in spite of some racism that she faced. The author faced and overcame that issue, but she correctly writes that all of us also encounter issues that might hold us back. She encourages her readers not to let any disadvantages get in the way of their goals. Because the book is a memoir, it tells people how to achieve their goals by following the author’s example.
I was deeply impressed by DeAngela Burns-Wallace’s book, Made for This. It was inspiring to read about her many accomplishments. I especially liked how the author emphasizes that leadership does not mean lording your position over others, but that it means inspiring them to become all that they can be. I also liked that Burns-Wallace doesn’t sugarcoat anything; she doesn’t hesitate to write about times when she was afraid or seemed stymied in her attempts to reach her goals. The author’s skill in telling her life story is a very effective way to teach and influence others. I encourage everyone to read this well-written book, learn from it, and get motivated to not only change their own lives, but to help others to achieve their goals and more.
