Manage My Meditation: Seven Days to a Powerful Tool for Success and Transformation is an instructional manual for learning how to meditate. Author Kenneth Martz, Psy.D., has been meditating for more than 20 years and says the practice is his favorite tool. Martz explains why people should meditate and how to do so. He explains that meditation provides numerous benefits, including overcoming negative emotions, developing positive traits, and improving physical health. He walks readers step-by-step through the practice of meditation. The book also includes a “troubleshooting” chapter for those who may run into problems. Each chapter ends with a summary and homework. There are numerous other resources referenced, including Martz’s website (he provides a coupon for free information) and his Facebook page.

Manage My Meditation: Seven Days to a Powerful Tool for Success and Transformation is a fine teaching tool. Because I knew virtually nothing about meditation almost all the material was new to me. However, Kenneth Martz, Psy.D., writes in easy-to-understand language so even those who have no previous background will clearly understand his methods. It’s an excellent primer for anyone who is new to the practice of meditation. What impressed me the most is Martz’s wide-ranging knowledge, his enthusiasm for his topic, and his obvious love of passing on this information to others. Although the book is for those new to mediation, I’m confident that even people who have engaged in the practice before will learn something new and get their commitment to mediation strengthened. I recommend Martz’s well-written book.

Manage My Meditation by Kenneth J. Martz, Psy.D. offers a look into everyday meditation and guides the reader through easy steps, building up to full meditation practice. The book opens with easy exercises to get the reader in tune with meditation, using breathing techniques and also providing definitions of meditation and the background of meditation. These helpful first steps lead the reader along and, little by little, everything comes together. There are daily exercises, takeaways from each chapter, and even homework to aid in the meditation journey. Most helpful are the provided links, which give the reader even more information and guided meditation practices.

What I enjoyed most about Manage My Meditation was the way it started off with easy lessons on breathing, and then progressed to posture, sitting and hand positions, and calming words or mantras to use in meditation. There were also many helpful analogies that allowed me to visualize things like my posture, such as the body as a garden hose—you want to remain straight to aid in circulation and avoid any kinks. I also loved the idea of using a candle or even music in meditation, as these are two things that normally help me relax. Because I suffer from anxiety, I found all of the tips for breathing and relaxing very helpful, and I especially liked the passages about releasing muscle tension. After reading this helpful guide, I will most certainly be seeking out more books by Kenneth J. Martz, Psy.D.
