Matti and Massi Missions Rome by Zeina Hamad is an illustrated children’s book that tells the exciting adventure of two brothers. Their father, Mr. Smiley, is a plane captain and as a result, their family traveled quite a lot. This time, the trip was more special because the two brothers, Matti and Massi, have a special mission that they need to accomplish once they reach Rome. There they meet another friend, their mission coach Francesca, who will help the boys navigate through the streets of Rome so that they can achieve their goals. Will Matti and Massi be able to complete their mission in a new country and a new city full of surprises and excitement, or will it be all in vain?
One of the things that I enjoyed about this book was the quality and design of the illustrations. Artist Ana Karina Quintero Villa did an amazing job, managing to create artwork that is in harmony with Zeina Hamad’s storyline. Another feature of Matti and Massi Missions Rome that I enjoyed was the educational aspect of the story. Throughout the book, Hamad provides the reader with interesting facts about the city of Rome that are easy to comprehend and memorize. I think that simple words in Italian can awaken curiosity in children to find and learn their meaning. This story is a combination of fun and learning.
