Come and meet Odie. Actually, his name is Odin, but everyone calls him Odie. He has unusual coloring: a brown coat with black stripes, like a zebra in a way. When dogs have stripes, they’re called a brindle. Odie enjoys everything about his life: his backyard, chasing squirrels up trees, eating, going for walks. He lives in a loving family and he’s well cared for. He’s also very curious about everything around him, even if he has seen it before. Like lizards and birds, frogs and toads, and so much more.
D.S. Provance’s picture book story, Meet Odie: A Paw Smart Book, is an interactive book with lots of fun, colorful photographs to illustrate Odie’s story. The story is told in the first person, from Odie’s point of view, as Odie goes through his daily regime of exploring and so much more. Each new adventure provides Odie with the opportunity to share his knowledge with young readers. Like the little tidbit about Odie being a brindle because of his striped coat. Or, the interesting tidbit about the green anole lizards that “will tilt their heads to look at you” and that they change colors almost as often as we change clothes. The reader also learns how Odie explores the world around him - “I smell everything around me. You read with your eyes. I mostly read with my nose.”
Odie not only outlines the importance of everything he does - walks, runs, socializing with other dogs - but he provides young readers with useful information on how to greet a strange dog. “Ask an adult first if you can pet a dog.” How many times have we heard that? And yet children are forever running up to a strange dog, something else Odie advises against because dogs react in a defensive manner when someone runs at them, all in the excitement of the moment and the desire to pet a dog. This is a sweet story about an inquisitive and compassionate family dog.
