When the world-wide war stalemate causes other military equipment manufacturers to fail, Acme remains flourishing. The company aids near bankrupt industries with loans, buying unrealized technological innovations, and providing jobs to the once dying city of Corinth. The company utilizes its massive repository of technological innovations and starts crafting Menagerie, a new type of robotic toys that exhibit more natural qualities than any previous artificial toy –- toys that would be loyal friends to adults.

In Menagerie, author A.K. Meek presents an interesting concept of technology that could benefit the humans in the future. Honestly, I could easily imagine myself rushing to the store to get my own Menagerie. Yet, dependence on artificial intelligence, no matter what form it takes, has its own drawbacks. Therefore, my opinion was neutral when Timothy Hollow expressed reluctance to activate his Menagerie. I somewhat expected the protest against the toys from the public, though not specifically from witches. The ending is brilliant.

This is a novella that is not bound by its length; it is comprehensive in a way that leaves more than enough imagination for its readers. The faultless plot and the creative concept of the story are the best I've read so far in the science fiction genre. The writing style is excellent and the pace is flawless and not rushed. I am amazed how A.K. Meek weaves an excellent sci-fi tale with rock solid premise in less than 100 pages. A fun, quick read and highly recommended to sci-fi fans.
