In Messing with Matilda by Cat Lavoie, we meet Matilda Hart. A professional organizer with her life in New York City, Matilda and her friend and coworker, Evie, battle to clean up the chaos for their list of clients. Matilda is planning on moving in with her boyfriend, Arthur, but he has different ideas, taking his life in a different direction and leaving Matilda confused and abandoned. She winds up back in Messina - her hometown and a place she has never been back to since she left home - with a plan to keep her head down and avoid everyone until she can leave again. Things never go according to plan, though, and a meeting with an old friend leads to Matilda getting involved in the wedding of her old high school enemy, Amber. Silas is Amber’s ex-boyfriend, desperate to get her back and enlisting Matilda’s help to sabotage the wedding. Matilda and Silas already know each other from NYC and Matilda is only too happy to get back at Amber. Things don’t always work out, however, and are about to get a little muddled and messy. Will Silas woo Amber back? Is Matilda prepared to go a different route to the one she had planned for herself?
Messing with Matilda by Cat Lavoie is a wonderfully heartwarming and funny story. As well as a romantic tale, it's all about facing up to things, reconnecting with lost friends and making new ones, burying the past and living for the future. I really enjoyed this, I read it one sitting and was disappointed that it had to end – I really hope that there will be another book, maybe a continuation of the story? Every character in this story was well described and developed, each one having their own backstory that comes out throughout the plot, culminating in everything coming together at the end with one or two surprising little twists. There is plenty of humor here, some of it quite dry, and it had me laughing out loud in places. I was rooting for Matilda and Silas all the way and was pleased to see good outcomes for some of the other characters too. Great story, a bit quirky, and definitely funny.
