Some kids see problems. Others see possibilities. In Amanda Aizu’s Mika Makes It Work!, readers meet a young girl named Mika, who handles every dilemma with a little creativity, confidence, and by saying: “I’ll make it work!” She’s full of ideas, and she isn't afraid to try them. No challenge seems too big or too small for her imagination. But sometimes her fixes create even more issues. When something goes wrong at Kai’s birthday celebration, she immediately sets out to find a solution. Mika’s determination is admirable, but will her latest plan solve the problem the way she hopes?

Mika Makes It Work! by Amanda Aizu was so much fun to read. The plot is easy for young children to understand, but it also has enough surprises for adults. The action builds as the fixes get bigger and more complicated. The moment when Mika tried to fix a ruined dessert by filling it with pancakes made me chuckle. Her optimism, fast thinking, and willingness to try make her easy to like. Her mantra, “I’ll make it work,” is something kids will be able to remember when they need help with tricky situations. As a cat lover, I think Mochi added an extra layer of cuteness. As a teacher, I would use it at the beginning of the school year when talking about problem-solving and making mistakes. The illustrations by Edo Ward are full of energy, color, and silliness. Children who enjoy stories featuring a creative main character, inventiveness, and plenty of humor will want to read this book. This story reminds readers that if at first they don't succeed, they should keep trying.
