Mimi’s Strategy by Linda Goudsmit begins by telling young readers about a little girl named Hildy, her parents and little sister Francesca. Francesca looked up to Hildy and wanted to be just like her, even liking the same toys as Hildy. Hildy liked to play, but not to share her toys. If Hildy attempted to take her toy away from her little sister, Francesca would cry. Hildy loved her sister but often got into trouble over this. Hildy got sent to time out by her mother for this. Hildy felt like she could do nothing right. Then, Hildy remembered her grandmother Mimi’s advice about having a strategy. The plan worked! Hildy’s mother was impressed. The book closes by telling youngsters that if they are in a similar predicament to use Mimi’s strategy.
This wonderful book by Linda Goudsmit is about sharing. If Mimi’s Strategy is read to children, maybe Goudsmit’s concept of sharing will influence young readers, especially if a child refuses to share. I think children will like this book as it is easy to understand and relate to. The illustrations by Xavier Pom stand out, showing the family and the events. This book is appropriate for preschool through kindergarten, possibly even older. The words of this story flow smoothly, from not wanting to share to the way to share utilizing Mimi’s strategy. Adults may even like this book. This is a short story packed with wisdom for all ages.
