The Third Option by Beca Salmon is a memoir that recounts the end of her marriage, beginning the night she discovers her husband, Jose, has been having a long-term affair. Salmon talks about pressing Jose for the truth, which he continually dodges. Her work as an oncology nurse practitioner continues as she juggles attempts to repair the marriage and therapy. Jose leaves the house, but Beca remains, developing repetitive physical actions that regulate her days with clarity completely absent. Beca works toward recognizing that simply waiting for a resolution only prolongs the harm, and she finally initiates a divorce. A new relationship comes with a different kind of choice, one she makes independently for the first time, marking a move from endurance toward authorship of her own life.

The Third Option by Beca Salmon is a really raw and transparent memoir linked to change. Written by a clinician who takes stock of her own life with absolute honesty, Beca intimately details both the heartening and jarring moments, such as the quiet relief she finds while snorkeling alone in Kauai, and the visceral aftermath of tearing paper across the floor as a way to remain present. I admire Salmon for how she faces her own patterns. I was able to relate to recognizing how anger can affect entire days, and committing to therapy after seeing the fear in people we love. I am a man, and this book was incredibly enlightening to me. Readers as a whole will benefit from witnessing how a long marriage can quietly shape one's identity over decades. I love how she takes on a European adventure, which becomes a lesson in self-reliance. This memoir is a beautiful account of rebuilding life after a relational rupture. Very highly recommended.
