For a decade, Mathis Grenier, a Toronto-based bio-digital architect at Hikari International, had been working on technology designed to enhance fundamental human capacity, and he was preparing for its trials. However, he is forced to yield control of the project to Aiden Frost, an American investor, whose sole intention is to manipulate human behavior unethically. Benoit Rochon, the leader of Minus One, an anarchist movement, also wants the technology and is hunting for Mathis following the failure to recruit him. In a desperate attempt to reverse the damage already done, Mathis flies to Osaka, Japan, the home of Hikari International headquarters. He meets Rei, whose sister Miyu and father Tatsuo, a former prizefighter, have been kidnapped by Rochon. Is there a way out of this predicament without spilling blood or surrendering the technology? Find out in Minus One by Mark Kolody.

There is no stopping once you open this gripping page turner. If you are looking for a dystopian sci-fi novel flavored with adventure, action, crime, suspense, drama, and thrills, Minus One by Mark Kolody is a must-read. From the start, Kolody wastes no time in acquainting readers with the high-stakes and troubles the cast faces. The story interweaves elements of gothic cyberpunk with diverse cultures, making the characters’ personal struggles relatable in a futuristic setting. I found Rei particularly interesting. While she seems to be the strongest, navigating the harsh codes of the Japanese mafia and calling the shots in her family every time a problem needed to be fixed, deep down, she is scarred and has a huge secret. To deal with the powerful corporate entities and ideologically driven terrorist groups coming after them, each character must face their fears, make sacrifices, put their lives on the line, and rely on unlikely allies. I loved this book.
