The city of Mirian is filled with theft, murder, violent gangs, angry shopkeepers, fires, drunks, and any sorts of trouble that one could think of. Nathan Tam is the captain of the market district of the Mirian Watch. He and his men are part of the overworked and somewhat unappreciated law enforcers, struggling to keep the city clean from criminals whilst keeping themselves alive at the same time. Unfortunately, there is a bigger threat looming; can the captain and his men handle it? The first installment of its series, Mirian is written by D.S. England.
What I like the most about Mirian is the realistic characterization. The lines of who is good and who is evil are not clearly imposed here; everyone has their flaws no matter what side they are on. Every character receives enough attention from author D.S. England in terms of their personality, role, and back story. The description of Mirian city is vivid and well-written. On the other hand, the overall editing is not flawless. That being said, these imperfections did not ruin the whole readability of the story for me and I was still able to enjoy it enough to finish it in two sittings. All in all, a good debut. It has a great premise and characters.
