Mommy Goes to the Hospital by Natalie Burns was inspired by the author’s personal experience. She had to leave her young children for an overnight hospital stay where she underwent an operation. The anticipation of such an event can be a frightening situation for children. The author has written this important story in a lighthearted tone. Using the voice of “Mommy”, she begins by listing all the fun activities she enjoys doing with her two kids. She reminds them of all the happy times they share, such as baking, playing at the playground, and especially reading books. She then explains why she must go to the hospital -- she has a big boo-boo in her tummy area that will be fixed by the doctors. Her recovery will be slow, but eventually, she will be able to do everything she used to do with them. The author cleverly uses children’s book characters as stand-ins for her medical team, and even a magical setting as the hospital.
Natalie Burns' Mommy Goes to the Hospital is illustrated by Maru Vargas and is a gift for any child whose parent requires an overnight hospital stay. This intuitive author shows sensitivity when weaving a unique and fanciful tale of the upcoming hospital stay, reducing a child’s anxiety. Burns cleverly uses relatable fairy tales, stories she often reads to her kids, as part of her health journey while in the hospital. She makes her doctor into a knight, her surgeon into a great wizard, and the hospital into a castle in a magical kingdom. Not only will a young reader use their own imagination to create a happy ending, but for nervous parents, this book fills a void in the children’s book genre. I believe this story is a necessary addition to every child's bookshelf.
