At JFK airport, while servicing a Boeing 747, a worker finds a dead man with green fluid coming out of his mouth. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta tries to locate and quarantine the flight’s passengers and crew, but whatever killed that man is spreading. At the same time, astronomers find a metal sphere that fell near Johannesburg, the inside covered with alien writing. As the alien virus spreads across the world, it does not kill indiscriminately, but making a vaccine is a problem as the virus constantly mutates. Not surprisingly, the major powers are looking to create a biological weapon from the virus. Decoding the alien writing, the virus was sent into space as a gift to all from a dying species. A colony ship is sent to Mars in case the aliens came and took over Earth...
With More than Human: The Mensa Contagion, Steven M. Moore has managed to pack a surprisingly good and well written story into a short book. He handles the aftermath of a global pandemic, the breakdown of social structures, and the emergence of altered humans with deft skill. Although the book’s sweeping scope would have been better explored in a longer work, what Mr. Moore has offered is nonetheless a very entertaining read.
