In her inspiring memoir, Mountain-Valley & The Rearview Mirror: A Journey of Faith, Resilience and Becoming Enough, Elaine V. Blyden-Hutchinson reflects on her childhood on Nevis and her experiences in the United States. At ten months old, her mother brings Hutchinson to Nevis to be raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather dotes on her, but unfortunately, he passes away when she is nine years old. At age 12, she moves to the States to be with her mother and older siblings. Hutchinson documents her struggle to fit in at a new school, her mother’s distant parenting, and her harrowing experiences in an abusive marriage. She recounts getting involved in a toxic friendship, her medical struggles, and her grief at losing loved ones.
I loved that Elaine V. Blyden-Hutchinson writes with unfiltered honesty and authenticity. Her story covers the heartbreaking trials she has been through, including a life-threatening breast cancer diagnosis, childhood trauma, and trauma from an abusive marriage. Still, her journey is full of hope since, despite the obstacles she faced, she built resilience, found her voice, and began her healing process through her deep trust in God. Hutchinson beautifully weaves scriptures and prayers into her story. She offers valuable life lessons about self-acceptance and choosing compassion over unforgiveness. The scenes included offer an immersive historical experience as she covers various places she has lived in and the trips she has been a part of. Ultimately, Mountain-Valley & The Rearview Mirror is a remarkable memoir with invaluable wisdom and hope for anyone struggling with trauma, self-doubt, medical challenges, grief, and loss.
