Mr. Peanut’s Friend by Uli Prozorova is a picture book about a cat named Mr. Peanut who enjoys his daily routine of getting up and having warm tea. One day, he notices a small door at the bottom of the wall. It turns out there is a mouse inside, and he goes by the name of Mr. Cheddar. They find that they have lots in common, but when Mr. Peanut tells his friends, Mr. Biscuit and Mr. Acorn, about him, they immediately tell him that “a cat and a mouse cannot live together!” Even when Mr. Peanut goes picnicking with Mr. Cheddar, his friends see him and laugh. Will this deter Mr. Peanut from forming a friendship with Mr. Cheddar, or will he prove that the best friendships come in unlikely small packages? Readers are invited to share in Mr. Peanuts' dilemma and see just how he solves this tiny problem.
Uli Prozorova created a delightful tale that immediately highlights the importance of not judging, even if someone or something is different. I loved how the story allows readers to go through a series of emotions with Mr. Peanut. On the one hand, he was delighted about his new friendship, and on the other, he seemed frustrated and sad at how his friends shunned the possible friendship. I also loved how the friendship between Mr. Peanut and Mr. Cheddar wasn’t forced, but it was built on the common things they shared. The autumn season and the forest settings were stunning and showcased Uli’s artwork. The illustrations were breathtaking, with warm, fall colors that made me think of a harvest, hot chocolate, and Halloween. Readers who enjoyed Cori Doerrfeld’s The Rabbit Listened will equally enjoy Mr. Peanut’s Friend. Perfect for reading with friends.
