"Mulholland Dive" by Michael Connelly is an anthology of three short stories.
'Cahoots': The setting is the 1930s. Six men sit around a table playing cards. McMilian is the bad guy, cheat and tempter; he suggests a robbery that should net the men a great deal of money when they melt down the Olympic medals and sell the gold. Could McMilian be truly planning a theft or was he trying to take the men off of what he was doing?
'Mulholland Dive': In this story we meet Detective Clewiston, a Reconstructionist. His current assignment is to determine whether the death of a man in a car crash was accidental or foul play. The deceased was a wealthy man in the midst of a nasty divorce.
'Two-Bagger': Police officers Stillwell and Harwick are watching Eugene Vachon. Vachon was just released from Jail where he had been serving time for being a meth cook. The two officers suspect Vachon will have to do a favor for the Road Saints Gang, who protected him while he was in prison. Could the favor be a commitment to murder?
Writing a short story is very difficult; the author does not have the luxury of time/length to develop the characters or plot. However, author Michael Connelly does a superb job in everything he writes. I enjoyed all three stories and I do prefer the Harry Bosch series. These stories are well-written, interesting and an all-around good read. These short stories were just long enough to make me want more.
