Murder Behind the Music by Andrew Higgins is the third book in the Irish Murder Mystery series. There’s always a price to pay when fame and fortune get in the way. Dalton Manor hosts a glamorous wedding for the daughter of a billionaire, featuring a star-studded guest list. But the festivities are quickly upended when the body of the bride’s dad is discovered, and his wall safe is found empty. A collection that Axel Haywood kept protected is missing, including the supposedly cursed Morella Chalice, a manuscript, and his will. This delivers the perfect circumstances for Demelza to use her skills to solve the case. Despite being an amateur sleuth, her journalistic knowledge gives her the edge to navigate a world of betrayal and glamour. Along with the help of Detective Inspector Gideon Meredith, she uncovers the surprising motives of the wedding party, from the secrets of the bereaved daughter to a singer struggling with debts. Anyone could be a suspect, and anyone could be guilty.
The mystery weaves murder, music, and potential curses in a chilling story that delivers the right amount of eeriness and suspense to keep readers turning the pages. Andrew Higgins creates a style and tone akin to the classic works of Agatha Christie in a literary-style mystery. The story primarily follows Demelza, who is a determined and headstrong sleuth, but with a softness to her. She cares about the investigation and even has moments where she feels for those she’s engaging with, even if they’re a suspect. This gives the story humanity as readers sympathize with the characters and connect with the case. Higgins crafts delightful dynamics, particularly between Demelza and Natasha, who have a fun back-and-forth. Natasha is a lovely character who plays well with Demelza and has a directness that makes her instantly likable. A charming whodunnit, Murder Behind the Music engages readers with a delightful, suspenseful, and almost spooky mystery.
