If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted yet engrossing mystery novel to enjoy, then Tonya Penrose has you covered with her latest novel Murder by Numbers which is the third book in the Shell Isle Mystery series. Cousins Page and Betsy are ready to mark the arrival of fall with an afternoon sipping pumpkin lattes. However, when they spy the local maths teacher involved in a shady transaction with an unsavory character, they quickly find that their sleuthing skills are required once more as a new adventure begins.
There’s so much to adore about this book, which stands alone for people who haven’t yet enjoyed the others in the series, from the cozy prose which sets a wonderful scene to the hugely entertaining protagonists. Murder by Numbers is a rare beast in that it is a comedy mystery that manages to be as genuinely mirthful as it is deeply engrossing, never needing to compromise on one aspect to satisfy the other, thanks to Tonya Penrose’s deft skill as a writer. With so many engaging ingredients in the mix, it would be easy for the result to end up like one of Betsy’s dubious cooking projects (recipes included in the book!), but the final product is light and engaging with a serious web of mystery at the center that will effortlessly keep readers on their toes from beginning to end. An essential bit of light escapism served with a rollercoaster of twists and turns and a pair of lovable and funny leading ladies, this is a book I can easily recommend to all.
