Mutation (Twenty-Five Percent Book 1) by Nerys Wheatley might at first glance appear like just another zombie story, but there was something about the plot synopsis that made me pick it up, and I was not disappointed. The reader follows the exciting, entertaining and often hilarious - yet creepy - journey of Alex, a survivor, and Micah, who initially would like nothing better than if all survivors were dead. A survivor is someone who survived being bitten by an infected person (not quite a zombie, but close enough I guess). Only 25% of the people who are bitten and taken to a hospital soon enough turn into survivors. Alex, a cop, is one of them. One day, his experience with being a survivor comes in rather handy when all hell breaks loose and his city is completely on its own when a sudden outbreak of the infection occurs. He has to team up with Micah, and it is not clear whether having someone like Micah around is really such a good idea.

Even though zombies are not my thing, I enjoyed reading Mutation (Twenty-Five Percent Book 1) by Nerys Wheatley very much, as it basically is not so much a zombie tale but a horror story about something that isn't that far fetched when you think about experiments that could be going on in some secret laboratory. When science came into the story, I found it a bit unnerving, because if someone can imagine it, then isn't it likely that someone else is working on it? In addition to unnerving the reader (that's what a horror book should do after all), the story is also well written with a nice mix of action, humour, and good dialogue.
