My Only Friends Are Pirates is a collection of narrative poems by BJ Davis. The book is inspired by the author's time on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The poems tell a story of the adventures of two drinking buddies on the reservation. The pair enjoys an uneventful stay on the reservation, but when a child's body is found in the charred remains of the tribal chairman's house and Raymond, an elusive handyman, has new money, they decide to follow him. One night, they get shot at while following Raymond's car and almost lose their lives. This does not stop them. Instead, they continue tracking Raymond, but this time on foot. This adventure unravels secrets and leads to death and revenge missions.
My Only Friends Are Pirates took me on a wild adventure filled with shocking plot twists and intriguing characters. I loved everything about this book, from the community drama to the characters' backstories and traumas. BJ Davis gave detailed descriptions of the characters' emotions, making them feel familiar and relatable. The story took me on a roller coaster of emotions. It has some funny, sad, and tense scenes. The book mentions sobriety, grief, human and drug trafficking, and many more social issues. The pictures at the end of each chapter were the highlight of this book. Each one was captivating, from the images of trucks to the people and buildings. The pictures perfectly correspond with the story and add another layer of emotion. My Only Friends Are Pirates is a poetic and photographic work of art, and I enjoyed reading it.
