It had been three months since Eff, a teenage girl from Earth, had arrived on the alien planet whose name she didn’t even know. She was suffering from partial amnesia and had no memory of her life before then. Eff had been surviving alone on supplies from abandoned pods and seeking shelter in them or out in the wild until two humans apprehended her. She soon learns they are scouts from a camp called Nabukko, where they take her and introduce her to their leader, Merula. Merula offers to accommodate Eff in exchange for her contribution at the camp. As Eff interacts with the camp members, she notices the tension and secrecy around her. But that’s not all. After the mysterious death of a camp member, it is revealed that it was the third murder at the camp. What exactly is going on at Camp Nabukko? Find out in Nabukko: Book One of the Nabukko Trilogy by K. R. Gadeken.
Using a first-person perspective to unfold the plot, Gadeken shows the alien world through Eff’s eyes. Coupled with her amnesia, lack of in-house camp knowledge, and the vivid setting of the alien world, this deepens the mystery and suspense. The prose balances between scenes of action and tension with moments of introspection, giving the storyline a dynamic pace. Gadeken exposes the cast’s emotions and traits through lively character-driven dialogue, which feels realistic. The story explores themes of survival, identity, self-discovery, relationships, and friendship. Each character seems to have their own agenda, and their interactions are marked with suspicion and explosive confrontations. Lovers of young adult sci-fi novels blended with mystery, adventure, and a splash of drama will find Nabukko by K. R. Gadeken an enthralling read.
