Ned’s Fanciful Webs: The Story of a Starving Artist, written by Harrison Martin and illustrated by M.T. Bear, is a humorous children’s picture book told in limerick rhyme. Ned is a spider with a skill for crafting large, ornate webs that we appreciate throughout the book. Sometimes, the book requires a turn of the page to enjoy the full majesty of his creations! He spins a variety of designs, from roller-skating hippos to Christian children’s song lyrics, which spread over the pages. However, it seems that while Ned is gifted, his webs may not fulfill their intended purpose for spiders, with the humorous twist at the end.

Fans of spiders, limericks, and kooky characters will enjoy Harrison Martin and M.T. Bear’s Ned’s Fanciful Webs! The reading level is simple enough for an early reader (pre-K through third grade) who is looking for a book to try on their own, but interesting enough to be enjoyed by older readers during story time. The book has some Christian references throughout, like a webbed depiction of the Ark of the Covenant (apparently, Ned is also an archeology nerd) and the lyrics to “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” Because the book is about spiderwebs, most of the art is gray, with black lettering around the borders of the pages. Not a complete surprise, but I would have loved to see more color and detail outside of the webs rather than gray on white throughout. Still, don’t let that stop you from having fun and sharing some laughs with Ned!
