New York, Phew York is a unique book from author Amber Jones. As the adult reads the book, the child can scratch the area in the circle and get a scent which resembles the odors of New York. The book itself is very colorful and it will hold young readers' interest. The child reader is taken by cab from the airport directly to the hotel. Then, there is a subway ride to the SoHo district, Little Italy, and Chinatown where various foods can be "sniffed." Then comes a tour of the financial district (which most younger children won't understand) and then, many high buildings and Union Square are visited. The Lower East Side has its own odors as does Central Park at night. The Upper East and West Sides, Harlem, Washington Heights, Broadway, and Times Square are all mentioned.
The sniffing circles are not especially easy to locate and I did not find the odors especially accurate. Unless the child lives in New York, the various areas may not be particularly meaningful. But the concept of the book is delightful. What I loved were the illustrations! Tim Probert has done a remarkable job of bringing the text to life. Even when the rhyming text becomes a bit awkward at times, the illustrations serve to stimulate the child's interest so that the overall book is interesting and effective. The information is substantial for the younger child to absorb but the activity of scratching and sniffing, coupled with the lively illustrations, can interest any child who truly wants to explore New York City.
