No Man's Land is a heart-wrenching story by Francis J. Shaw about the soldiers who fought in WWI. It is narrated mainly from Doctor Newman's point of view. The year is 1921 and Doctor Newman travels to Yorkshire to deliver a message to Annie. Unfortunately, Annie is gone, and the doctor meets Pearson, better known as Percy, and his wife, Florence. Newman tries to leave but the couple insists he stays. During his stay with them, Doctor Newman learns about sheepdogs, the countryside, and Percy's experience during the war. Percy gives Newman an account of the gruesome horrors he witnessed and the scars they left on his body and soul.
No Man's Land took me on a roller coaster of emotions. The pain these soldiers went through, even after the war, is overwhelming. Some died, others came back traumatized and injured, and others were so haunted that they preferred to be presumed dead and never go home. The war destroyed families and separated loved ones but it also turned a coward into a legend. Percy's and Newman's determination to give Harry recognition is honorable and brave. Francis J. Shaw has created memorable characters that are realistic and relatable. He introduces them personally and makes you realize this can happen to anyone. I loved how the author slowly builds the clues to the plot twist. Percy's and Florence's antics to keep Newman around were amusing and they bring a lighthearted note to the tale. Offering a wonderful opportunity to get lost in its legendary story, this one will swallow you up and leave you contemplating for days.
