Not Lucille by Mike Steele follows Lucy Contento, a lively and curious 10-year-old girl who is a fifth-grader at Robbins Elementary in Chambersburg. At the start of school, she is happy to be in class 5A, which is located at the top of the building and has the best view. Her excitement is cut short on meeting her new teacher, Miss Gillingham, who is strict, and Lucy also receives detention on her first day of school. When she is dismissed, she takes a shortcut through Trenton Academy for the Deaf, and she notices a deaf girl sitting alone in a classroom. As the story progresses, she becomes friends with the girl, whose name is Florence, and decides to learn sign language, and also begins to search for ways to get an American Sign Language dictionary.

Not Lucille by Mike Steele is set in the year 1931 and is mainly about Lucy and her zeal to learn how to communicate with her friend, Florence. The story flow is natural and seamless, showing Lucy's personality and how she navigates the world she finds herself in at such a young age. The characters are all unique, and Lucy, as the main character, stands out because she is outspoken and left-handed. Though she is often misunderstood by adults, she gives the impression of individuality. I loved reading about her relationship with her baby brother, Johnny. Lucy helps readers understand friendship, communication, identity, and childhood expectations. The book is written in a simple and engaging way, which makes it suitable for young readers because they can relate to Lucy and would understand the moral lessons conveyed.
